Expert MyHeritage Health Review 2019

In a nutshell: The MyHeritage DNA Healthy+Ancestry Test provides valuable information about your risk for developing or passing on health conditions. While it won't tell you if you have or will definitely develop a condition, it's a great resource to have when speaking to your doctor about your health and family planning. MyHeritage has a great online help center and customer support to answer any questions you may have.

Overview

MyHeritage provides DNA analysis via their MyHeritage DNA Health+Ancestry kit to offer customers insights about their personal health. This test can help you make better-informed decisions when it comes to your health and family planning.

It’s easy to purchase the kit from the website and to create a free MyHeritage account. The DNA sample is collected using a simple and painless cheek swab. After submitting your DNA sample, you’ll receive reports that inform you of your genetic risk for developing certain conditions and whether or not you’re a carrier for genetic disorders that can be passed on to your children.

Test Kit & Features

Once the kit arrives, the first thing that you need to do is activate it on MyHeritage’s website. If you haven’t already created an account, you’ll be asked to create one and then enter the activation code that is listed on your kit.

After activating your kit, you will need to fill out a questionnaire about your personal and family health history that will be reviewed by an independent physician. Next, you’ll need to collect your DNA sample. The MyHeritage DNA Health+Ancestry kit doesn’t require blood or saliva for DNA analysis. To collect your sample, all you have to do is swab the inside of your cheek with the cheek swab that’s provided with the kit. The kit also includes a return envelope that you use to mail your sample to the MyHeritage lab. After returning your sample to the lab, you can expect your results in 4–6 weeks.

DNA Test Results

The DNA results provided by the MyHeritage DNA Health+Ancestry test are not meant to give you a diagnosis for any disease or condition. The results also should not be used to make any type of serious health decision without consultation with your physician.

Even if your test results indicate that you have a higher than average risk for developing a certain condition, it doesn’t mean that you will definitely develop the condition. It’s important to understand that other factors like your lifestyle and your environment can affect whether or not you develop a particular condition.

The test uses technology and algorithms to estimate your genetic risk and determine if you’re a carrier for certain conditions. You can share your results with your physician and potentially use them to make proactive decisions about your healthcare management and even your family’s future. Your DNA test results will include reports on genetic risk, carrier status, and your personal ancestry. The MyHeritage DNA Health+Ancestry test currently provides health reports for 29 conditions, with more slated to be added in the near future.

The genetic risk reports provide you with information regarding your risk for developing certain genetic conditions. Though the reports cannot tell you whether or not you will develop a certain condition, they can tell you whether you have a decreased, average, or increased risk of developing the conditions that the MyHeritage DNA Health+Ancestry kit tests for. The test currently includes genetic risk reports for 14 conditions including Late-Onset Parkinson’s Disease, Late-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Hereditary Breast Cancer BRCA1/BRCA2, Celiac Disease, and Crohn’s Disease.

MyHeritage also analyzes your polygenic risk score (PRS) for three of the most common medical conditions — Heart Disease, Breast Cancer, and Type 2 Diabetes. Polygenic risk scores examine numerous variants across multiple genes that impact your risk for developing these conditions. This is an extremely comprehensive testing method, and MyHeritage is one of the first consumer DNA companies to offer these types of reports.

The carrier status reports alert you to whether or not you’re a carrier for a number of genetic conditions. This test is important for those who are planning to start a family. If both you and your partner are carriers for the same condition, your children have a 25% risk to inherit that genetic condition. If you’re looking to start a family, you and your partner can both take the MyHeritage DNA Health+Ancestry test to learn if you’re carriers for certain hereditary conditions. Some of the conditions that you’ll receive reports for include Tay-Sachs, Sickle Cell Anemia, Familial Dysautonomia, Fanconi Anemia, and Niemann-Pick Disease.

For customers in the U.S., your test is supervised by an independent physician network. A physician will review your health questionnaire and your reports before they’re released. If they recommend genetic counseling, it is included in the price of your test.

In addition to the health reports, the MyHeritage DNA Health+Ancestry kit enables you to learn about your ancestry and ethnic origins. The test will give you a detailed breakdown of the ethnic regions your ancestors came from. There are 42 different ethnic regions that are supported by the test.
