You may be wondering: why is a domain name so important?
Domain names are your and your website’s calling card on the World Wide Web. A domain name will not only set the tone for your entire website, but a memorable or highly creative domain name can even drive traffic to your website. As such, you should take the time to choose the right domain name for your site.
1. First and foremost, know your website, define its function, whether it is a blogging website, a website that represents your company or business, or a website for personal use. Try and list a few adjectives that encapsulate your website, what its function is, what you are trying to convey with your webpage etc. Play around with your adjectives and see if you can come up with a domain name that represents your website and/or your brand.
2. SEO, or search engine optimization, should also play a role in helping you come up with a good domain name, especially if you are looking to promote your website. You can use Google’s Keyword Planner tool to come up with a few industry-relevant keywords and then try and incorporate them into your domain name.
3. Take into consideration the suffix you would like to use for your domain name. .com domain names are the most popular and mainstream, but they are also the most expensive. .net and .org are also popular choices and are generally more affordable, or you may even want to use an international suffix for your website. if you are, for example, based in the UK you may opt for a .uk suffix.
4. Once you’ve come up with a few domain names you like, check whether or not they are available. You can check domain name availability for free on a number of domain name registrar sites such as Name.com. It’s as easy as typing in your chosen domain name into the site's domain name search field and clicking ‘Find’.
