How Does Tinder Work?

Tinder is an increasingly popular app that matches people looking for casual or long-term relationships. And although the app is relatively simple to use, not much is known about the actual matchmaking algorithm Tinder uses.

So how exactly does Tinder work? Not all of the app's information and algorithms are available to the general public, but here are the basic things that we know about Tinder:

Matching

First of all, it's important to understand how “swiping” works. The profiles that appear on your Tinder app are of people Tinder thinks you are likely to find attractive, and as you spend more time on the app swiping left or right, it gets better at this. Furthermore, the profiles you will see are of people of your preferred gender, who fall within the age range you specified, within a reasonable distance from your location.

Once you decide you like the person, it's pretty simple: you swipe right. If you don’t, you swipe left, and they’ll never know that you skipped their profile. If the person that you swiped right on sees your profile and swipes right too, then you are matched and you can begin a private conversation from there. Easy enough, isn’t it?

Downloading and Setting Up

Tinder is available on both iOS and Android and can be downloaded for free. All you have to do is open the store, type the app name in the search box and go from there. To create an account after installation, you need to register with your phone number and Facebook account. You'll then be instructed to fill in the necessary information about yourself and what your preferences are.

Tinder has also released a limited desktop dating site but this is not available in the US, meaning Tinder can be used on mobile devices only. Furthermore, aside from using your Facebook information, Tinder does not verify profiles or do much to weed out fake profiles.

Conclusion

While Tinder is a useful app for dating in its own right, you do have to consider the fact that matches are based solely on swipes. This can be extremely limiting, especially when you consider the wide range of sophisticated filters and matching options provided by other great dating sites such as Zoosk and Match.com. Furthermore, since Tinder is a free app with
